Is This Normal?
July 2, 2009

This was on the front page of Yahoo! today, and I thought it looked a little strange. Then I realized that they called the president “Barack Obama.” Not “President Obama,” or “President Barack Obama.” Is that standard AP usage? I thought the correct way to refer to the president in news headlines was to always put in the word president. No? Yes?

Huh. Good catch. As much as I’m not one for conspiracy theories, I do wonder if someone is getting pleasure out of seeing “Taliban” and “Barack Obama” pop out like that. I’ll be on the lookout for more of this type of thing. I don’t remember seeing AP stories sans “President” during the last presidency.

i used to get a little bothered by that when i heard mr. bush or mr. obama on npr…because like the person or not, it’s still the office of the president that is being referred to. then, one night when a reporter said it, i noticed the accent and realized i was listening to npr broadcasting the bbc.
i’m not sure about the ap, but i’m pretty sure other countries can refer to our president as ninnypants if they want. though, there is still the respect factor…
